The Wyldheart demo is currently available as a free download for PC on Steam, launched by developer Wayfinder Studios and publisher Curve Games following its showcase debut. Designed as a standalone one-shot adventure, this public demo provides over five hours of content that lets you play solo or in online co-op with up to four players. You can jump directly into the starting underground caverns, explore the hex-based Whisperwoods region, and experiment with classless character builds without signing up for a closed beta.
How to Download and Access the Wyldheart Demo
The demo is public and requires no beta keys or waiting lists. To install it:
- Open Steam and search for Wyldheart.
- Navigate to the official store page.
- Locate the Demo section and select Download or Add to Library.
- Once the download finishes, launch the game directly from your Steam library.
The demo features full controller support and functions on Steam Deck, though Wayfinder Studios notes that optimization for Steam Deck is still underway and currently recommends playing on PC with a keyboard and mouse. What Content Is Playable in the Demo?
The demo serves as a bite-sized, 5+ hour slice of the broader tabletop-inspired campaign set in the fallen Kingdom of Caerwyn.
Character Creation and Peasant Backgrounds
In keeping with the game's premise that you are not a legendary chosen one, you begin as ordinary folk caught in sudden danger. The demo offers character customization featuring:
- Four playable ancestries: Freefolk, Mossling, Grimhorn, and Stonefolk.
- 19 story backgrounds: Options include roles such as Outlaw, Fisher, Baker, Squire, Dishwasher, Tinkerer, Drunk, Grave Robber, and Gong Farmer.
- Background perks: Your starting role determines your initial loadout and stat adjustments (for example, the Baker starts with a rolling pin and meal preparation skills, while the Drunk and Dishwasher grant raw stamina boosts).
Locations and Dungeons
Your adventure begins in The Slurper's Den, an underground mushroom cave filled with bioluminescent growth, giant slugs, and smiling fungal enemies that unleash poison vapors and neon-green flames.
After clearing the initial cavern, you emerge into the Whisperwoods overworld. From there, you can visit:
- Rivermere Village: A central settlement where you can trade gear with merchants like Halvar, rest at Old Lady Pim's inn, gather local rumors, and discover quests organically without floating quest markers.
- Three Additional Dungeons: Exploring the surrounding hexes leads to hidden keeps and ruins, including The Withered Keep, where you navigate floor traps, battle fungal guards, and confront the Mini Crown King.
- The House of Memories: A secluded sanctuary run by Olrich, who archives lost minds and handles ritual revivals.
Key Gameplay Mechanics and Survival Rules
Wyldheart blends real-time action combat with tabletop roleplay mechanics. Understanding a few core systems will prevent premature party wipes.
Classless Progression and Magic Grimoires
There are no rigid class restrictions. You allocate earned skill points across flexible skill trees: Weaponry (swords, axes, maces, spears, and bows), Adventuring (survival, attributes, and dungeoneering), and Magic (including the Oldways paths of Blight, Pyre, Rime, and Storm).
To cast magic, spending skill points is not enough on its own. You must find and equip a Grimoire associated with that element (such as a Book of Rime for frost spells). Outside of menus, hold the T key to open the radial ability wheel and assign your learned spell to an active slot.
Hex Map Travel and Random Encounters
Overworld traversal across Whisperwoods uses a hex-based board layout inspired by tabletop games. Traveling between hexes that lack safe refuges carries the risk of random encounters and ambushes, which can interrupt rest or force you into combat before you reach your destination.
Hope and the Death Penalty
Your character starts the campaign with 5 Hope. Every time your health hits zero and you are knocked out, you lose 1 Hope:
- Restoring Hope: Spending the night resting at an inn or drinking at a civilized tavern restores your lost Hope points.
- Zero Hope Knockout: If you are knocked down with zero Hope remaining, your character becomes unplayable.
- Reviving the Fallen: To bring a permanently downed character back beyond the Veil in the demo, you must travel to the House of Memories and deliver specific reagents to Olrich: 10 unhatched snail eggs, 5 fibers, and 1 humanoid skull.
Co-Op Scaling and Drop-in Play
The demo supports seamless drop-in and drop-out co-op for up to four players via invite codes. Difficulty dynamically scales with party size: enemy health bars do not artificially inflate into damage sponges, but Wayfinder Studios increases the number of enemy spawns to match group size. Experience points earned during a session are shared across all active, online players in the party.
Wyldheart Demo FAQ
Will demo progress carry over to the full release?
No. Official Steam announcements confirm that active development updates will make demo save files incompatible with both Early Access and the full launch build.
Can you replay the demo after finishing it?
Yes. You can start multiple campaign files directly from the main menu, allowing you to test different racial ancestries, background combinations, and weapon setups.
Can you play the demo completely offline?
While the full campaign is designed around drop-in co-op, you can complete the demo entirely solo. An active broadband internet connection is listed under system specifications.
When does the full game launch?
Wayfinder Studios plans to launch Wyldheart into Steam Early Access first, with the full 1.0 release targeted for 2027.
