Wyldheart demo multiplayer allows up to four players to team up online in a standalone fantasy adventure set in the fallen Kingdom of Caerwyn. Developed by Wayfinder Studios, the public Steam demo offers over five hours of cooperative gameplay featuring seamless drop-in and drop-out support, tabletop-style encounter scaling, and shared progression across four distinct dungeons.

How Multiplayer Works in the Wyldheart Demo

The demo is built around flexible cooperative play, allowing you to venture out alone or team up with up to three friends. You do not need a locked party roster to make progress, and different groups can be managed across separate saves.

  • Party Size: Supports solo play or co-op for up to four players.
  • Drop-In/Drop-Out: Friends can freely join or leave an ongoing session without forcing the host to restart the campaign.
  • Multiple Campaigns: You can host and run multiple separate campaigns from the main menu, making it easy to maintain different save files for different friend groups.
  • Cloud-Shared Saves: Campaign progress is tracked via cloud saves, though Wayfinder Studios has confirmed that demo save data will not carry over to the final release due to ongoing development changes.

Shared XP and Leveling Rules

Wyldheart features shared experience points to keep co-op parties progressing together, but it operates under specific constraints during the demo:

  • Active Online Sharing: When XP is earned, every party member currently online in the session gains that XP.
  • Offline Status: Players who are offline when an objective or combat encounter is completed do not receive XP. Wayfinder Studios clarified in their demo FAQ that asynchronous shared XP is currently held back while they fine-tune the system.

Dynamic Difficulty and Encounter Scaling

Instead of simply turning enemies into sponges with inflated health bars, Wyldheart handles cooperative difficulty much like a tabletop roleplaying game.

  • Enemy Hit Points: Enemy HP does not scale upward when additional players join the session.
  • Enemy Density: The game scales combat encounters by increasing the number of enemies that spawn. Larger parties will face larger mobs and denser ambushes along the roads and inside dungeon chambers.

Death, Hope, and Revival Mechanics

Party survival relies on managing Hope, a resource each character possesses. Managing knockouts is essential to prevent a character from being temporarily removed from play.

MechanicHow It Works in Co-Op
Starting HopeEvery character begins the game with 5 Hope.
KnockoutsEach time your character is knocked out, you lose 1 Hope.
Permadeath StateGetting knocked out at 0 Hope renders the character unplayable until revived.
Revival LocationThe party must travel to the House of Memories in the Whisperwood Forest.
Revival RequirementDeliver specific reagents to the NPC known as the Stranger to bring your character back from beyond the Veil.

Demo Co-Op Content and Combat Options

Players entering the multiplayer demo start as humble peasants rather than legendary heroes, beginning in a dungeon escape scenario before branching into open exploration.

Playable Content

  • Character Customization: Four ancestries (Freefolk, Mossling, Grimhorn, and Stonefolk), 19 character backgrounds, and hundreds of cosmetic options.
  • The Slurper's Den: A mushroom-themed starter dungeon filled with fungal enemies and hazards like neon-green fire and bioluminescent caverns.
  • Whisperwoods Region: The open region outside the den containing three additional dungeons, roving ambushes, random encounters, and traveling NPCs.
  • Rivermere Village: A hub town where villagers have their own routines and schedules, offering local gossip and quest clues.

Classless Combat and Magic

The game features completely classless combat trees (Adventuring, Survival, Dungeoneering, Weaponry, and Oldways of Magic). Players can combine melee and ranged weapons—swords, axes, clubs, spears, and bows—with elemental Grimoires across four magical schools: Blight, Pyre, Rime, and Storm. To cast spells, unlock the skill, equip the matching Grimoire, and hold the T key outside the menu to open the skill wheel and bind the ability.

System Requirements for Co-Op Play

Because multiplayer sessions require continuous synchronization, players should ensure their systems meet the official demo requirements:
